Are You Thinking About LASIK?
It’s okay to talk to your primary eye doctor about wanting LASIK! LASIK eye surgery can change your life in a few minutes. So where do we start the conversation? At the beginning! What is LASIK and is this surgery right for you?
LASIK stands for (Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis). It is the best known commonly performed laser refractive surgery to correct vision problems. LASIK requires the use of a specific laser (excimer) to change the shape of the cornea. LASIK corrects multiple vision problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.
Candidates for LASIK surgery are typically twenty-one years and older. LASIK eye surgery is not available for people under the age of eighteen years old as it has not been approved by the FDA. A good candidate for LASIK has good general eye health and has had a stable prescription for at least a year. LASIK is not recommended for people who participate in contact sports where hits to the face are normal. Autoimmune diseases, immune deficiencies, and certain medications such steroids and retinoic acid can disqualify someone from getting LASIK. A change in contact lens prescription for glasses prevents someone from being eligible for LASIK
Naturally every surgical procedure has their pros and cons. That’s why it’s important to consult your primary eye doctor to see if the pros outweigh the cons and the surgery doesn't put you at risk for any negative side effects. Some of these risks include dry eye, glare and halos at night, or possible regression. Rarely corneal ectasia (cornea becomes too weak) can occur but this can certainly be prevented with proper patient selection.
